Real-life Examples

Who is Sick? http://whoissick.org/sickness/ This is a neat little mash-up that lets members of the public anonymously post information about their sicknesses so others can see what bugs are going around. (obviously could be extended to all sorts of posting by citizens - from lost cats to graffiti etc) but the aspect that interested me was having local doctors surgeries automatically posting this kind of information which could really make it easier for people to see the bugs that were going round (plus it is likely that previously un-noticed or under-noticed health trends would be highlighted).

Another interesting example is Columbia's citywide database project. Basically the US District of Columbia has created a citywide database to make as much public data as possible available in real or near-real time and in ways that make it easy for others to use. http://dcstat.octo.dc.gov/dcstat/site/default.asp?dcstatNav=|30914|
